Welcome to The Spalding Method™ Phonograms app!
NOTICE: By installing this mobile application, you agree to the terms and conditions.
The Spalding Phonograms app is designed to help students learn the fundamental phonics connections between speech sounds and written symbols, known as phonograms. Mastering these phonograms is crucial for accurate and automatic reading, writing, and spelling. Teaching students all the sounds associated with each alphabet letter or combination of letters enables them to quickly read, spell, and write high-frequency words. Proficient knowledge of phonograms also expands vocabulary and enhances effective communication skills in writing. Developing the ability to accurately place phonograms within words for spelling and confidently pronouncing unfamiliar words requires critical thinking.
The Spalding Phonograms app is a valuable tool for students who require extra practice, including homeschooling, ESL (English as a Second Language), ELL (English Language Learners), ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students, and those with dyslexia or other learning disabilities. It encourages collaboration and communication between schools and homes to ensure appropriate and comprehensive practice of the phonograms. The Spalding Phonograms app aligns with state and national standards for core reading foundational skills that are vital for early reading success and comprehension, which include:
- Phonemic awareness
- Feature recognition
- Letter recognition
- Sound-symbol relationships (decoding)
The Spalding Phonograms app offers the following options for all 87 phonograms:
- Phonogram Introduction by selected group: The student is presented with the phonograms in the order of instruction in The Writing Road to Reading. They listen to the teacher pronounce the sound(s) and repeat the sound(s) themselves.
- Oral Phonogram Review: A random phonogram card is displayed, followed by a pause. The student says the sound(s) and then checks their accuracy by listening.
- Written Phonogram Review: The student hears the phonogram sound(s), followed by a pause. They repeat the sound(s), listen for cues if needed, and write the phonogram on lined paper. The card is immediately shown so that the student can check for accuracy.
- Differentiated Practice: Users can select specific phonograms (from all 87) that require further practice. These phonograms can then be practiced in Phonogram Introduction, Oral Phonogram Review, or Written Phonogram Review.
